Message from the Pastor
As you worship today, remember that the Sabbath also includes rest for your mental wellbeing.
Anxiety and worry are the hindrances to a restful, peaceful mind and causes stress. When stress occurs, it empowers and enlarges problems and blocks solutions. When emotions are high we don’t think too clearly and can make rash decisions. Never make permanent decisions based on temporary emotional setbacks.
To safeguard against that, it’s important that you develop a peaceful state of mind. Find a place that resonates calm within you and spend quality time there. Worship also actually helps to calm your mind.
Then, when you’ve steadied your nerves and feel your thoughts are clear, go back to the situation that’s bothering you and let God give you clarity of mind to deal with it.
Have a peaceful Sabbath today!

STEWARDSHIP MINISTRIES
Bible Study & The Mind
An Antidote for Poisonous Insinuations—When the mind is stored with Bible truth, its principles take deep root in the soul, and the preference and tastes become wedded to truth, and there is no desire for debasing, exciting literature that enfeebles the moral powers and wrecks the faculties God has bestowed for usefulness. Bible knowledge will prove an antidote for the poisonous insinuations received through unguarded reading.—The Review and Herald, November 9, 1886. (Our High Calling, 202.)
Protects From Superstition—If the teachings of this Word were made the controlling influence in our lives, if mind and heart were brought under its restraining power, the evils that now exist in churches and families would find no place .... The teachings of the Word of God are to control mind and heart, that the home life may demonstrate the power of the grace of God....
Without the Bible we should be bewildered by false theories. The mind would be subjected to the tyranny of superstition and falsehood. But having in our possession an authentic history of the beginning of the world, we need not hamper ourselves with human conjectures and unreliable theories.—The Review and Herald, November 10, 1904. [97]
It Improves the Reasoning Faculties—If the mind is set to the task of studying the Bible for information, the reasoning faculties will be improved. Under study of the Scriptures the mind expands and becomes more evenly balanced than if occupied in obtaining general information from the books that are used which have no connection with the Bible. No knowledge is so firm, so consistent and far-reaching, as that obtained from a study of the Word of God. It is the foundation of all true knowledge.
The Bible is like a fountain. The more you look into it, the deeper it appears. The grand truths of sacred history possess amazing strength and beauty and are as far-reaching as eternity. No science is equal to the science that reveals the character of God.
Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, yet he said, “Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the Lord my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”—The Review and Herald, February 25, 1896. (Fundamentals of Christian Education, 393.)

GIVE—EVEN IF IT IS TOO MUCH
“But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.”–Luke 12:48
When Fabian (not his real name) was doing his final high school class in Zambia, his brother sent him money for the examination fee. Upon counting, Fabian realized it was almost twice the required examination fees. When he saw that, he began to wrestle with the idea of giving tithe and an offering equivalent to tithe—meaning another ten percent. This was a challenging decision for a poor young student. After much thought, he decided to return tithe and give another ten percent as offerings.
While he was counting the tithe and offerings, his friends arrived and inquired where he was taking the money he just put in an envelope. He explained that his tithe and offerings were given to God.
His friends laughed and told him in no uncertain terms that the amount was too much. One of them said, “Why can’t you give a small fraction of it? God knows that you are a student and need money. When you’ll begin to work, then you can give God more money, not now. Keep some of the money for yourself.”
Fabian calmly told his friends that what he was giving to God was insignificant compared to what God gave Him in the person of His Son Jesus. The following day, he took that money to church.
Appeal
Brothers and sisters, as we return our tithe and offerings, let us remember what God gave to save us. Nothing should be considered too much to be given to God.

NO SMOKING DAY IN LAMBETH
Help in Lambeth for No Smoking Day 2024--
For No Smoking Day on Wednesday, we shared a message of support for anyone wanting to quit smoking in Lambeth. Help is available from pharmacies, specialists, text messages, a helpline, or an app. Stopping smoking is one of the best things for your health. You are more likely to succeed by mixing and matching personal help (like motivational support from a health advisor) with NRT, prescription medication, or e-cigarettes. There’s free support for all Lambeth smokers and options to fit your lifestyle and help you quit successfully.

Age Friendly Forum speaks up for Lambeth’s future
Last month, around 50 older residents and representatives of voluntary organisations who work on age-related issues joined Lambeth’s first Age Friendly forum. During the session, attendees discussed the key values and principles that will underscore how they’d like to engage with and help shape the Age Friendly Lambeth Action Plan development. With the older population of Lambeth increasing, it is important to ensure our borough is a place that meets the needs of us all as we age.

Letter from the SEC President
We were shocked and saddened by reports of the recent stabbing incident at an Assyrian Orthodox church in Sydney, Australia, in which a teenage assailant attacked clergy and churchgoers during a service. Our thoughts are with the injured and their families, and we pray for their swift recovery.
This disturbing incident serves as a sobering reminder of the need for vigilance. In a world marred by conflict and strife, where tensions have the potential to spill over into our diverse communities here in the UK, we may need to take proactive measures to ensure the safety of our congregations.
Indeed, as we reflect on the broader global landscape, the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, Sudan, Myanmar, and Ukraine and the resulting humanitarian crises demand our urgent attention and prayers. Gaza and Sudan, in particular, face critical shortages of water, food, electricity, and medical care, exacerbating the suffering of already vulnerable populations.
In light of these pressing needs, ADRA-UK has launched its Annual Appeal, 'A Call to Compassion.' This initiative seeks to support vulnerable children in South Sudan and Myanmar in attending school and provide essential emergency response and humanitarian aid in various regions.
While the door-to-door part of the appeal has been discontinued, all other fundraising strategies and opportunities are still open to our church communities. Your generous contributions and fundraising efforts are crucial in bringing healing and restoration to those affected by crises worldwide.
Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to compassion. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need, serving humanity as God intended.

Building a Culture of Discipleship
Discipleship is one of those forgotten and neglected topics in Adventism. We used to preach about the end of the world, the Sabbath, diet, tithing. But discipleship? We never used to talk about that! The very idea was, if you pay, pray, and obey, that’s all that was expected of you. If you kept the Sabbath, returned your tithe (and offerings) and stayed away from pork and worldly music, you were almost ready for translation. (Of course, there were always some vigilant saints who reminded us that we also needed to be vegetarians, drink eight glasses of water daily, and more recently – eat five portions of fruits and vegetables per day).
If I asked in a typical local church: Why are we here? What’s the purpose of our existence? In most churches, I am sure I would hear something about evangelism: ‘We are here to do evangelism.’ ‘Evangelism is the sole purpose of our existence.’ And maybe some knowledgeable people could even quote a bible text to support it. The Great Commission wording from Matt 28:18-20 readily comes to mind. However, do you know any text where Jesus forbids evangelism?
